New logo speaks to Fort Collins' future

The "new" city logo vs. the "old" city logo is the classic battle between the status quo and future change.Consider what the old logo stands for: Horsetooth Rock framed in a window with geese headed north. This is a logo for spectators, for people who view Horsetooth through their gas guzzling Ford Expeditions headed west on Horsetooth or Harmony Road. It speaks to the past, to the status quo.

The new logo, on the other hand, speaks to one of the greatest natural boundaries on earth: where the Rocky Mountains rise out of the Great Plains. "What's with the wave?" some ask. "We're not a seaside town." I grew up on the Oregon coast, and I've studied geography for a lifetime, and I would have to say that this logo speaks to placing us in a unique location, one visible from space, every bit as much a boundary as the ocean-land interface.

The undulating curves of the new logo incorrectly identified as swooshes, speak to our great natural environments in and around Fort Collins and invite spectators to get out of their gas guzzlers and walk, ride or otherwise enjoy our open spaces, natural areas and parks. Try bicycling up the Spring Creek bike trail and then along Centennial Drive along Horsetooth Reservoir to experience those "swooshes" yourself.
